The Walled Garden Series: Succession & Conservation

Join us at Glenarm Castle Estate for a special day of learning, conversation, and seasonal inspiration, centred around our historic Walled Garden.

Set against the beautiful surroundings of the Estate, this relaxed and informative experience invites guests to enjoy expert talks, refreshments, and an exclusive guided tour through one of our most treasured spaces – The Walled Garden.

Event Schedule

11:00am – Red Squirrel Conservation Talk
Begin your day in the Coach House with Su Topping, who will share the story of her important Red Squirrel conservation work here on the Estate. Learn more about these much-loved native animals and the ongoing efforts to protect them.

11:30am – Tea, Coffee & Scones
Enjoy a short break with tea or coffee and freshly served scones in the Coach House.

12:00pm – The Story of the Walled Garden
Our Head Consultant Gardener, Neil Porteous, will guide guests through his horticultural journey and explain how he came to consult on Glenarm Castle’s gardens. This talk will explore how plans for the Walled Garden are developed, with a special focus on garden succession and planning for seasonal change.

12:30pm – Guided Walled Garden Tour
Following the talks, guests will make their way to the Walled Garden for a one-hour guided tour with Neil. Along the way, he will share expert insights into the garden’s design, planting, and maintenance, finishing with live demonstrations on clipping and propagation. Guests will also receive a clipping to take home and regrow themselves.
