The tulips have all been lifted now and we have replanted the herbaceous plants into the Hot Border. This year we have added a new layer of interest – a tier of tall standards which should just rise above the tall herbaceous perennials at the back of the border later on in the year. Plants such as standard Fuchsia, Streptosolen, Abutilon and Cantua buxifolia, the Peruvian Magic Tree. Also, we have included a few new perennials such as the old fashioned Centaurea macrocephalaand the mildew resistant bergamot, Monarda didyma ‘Garden View Scarlet’ and a lovely little bulbous plant, with showy orange flowers, Ornithogalum dubium.
The newly renovated six Central Borders have also been planted up. This year, we have planted a few hardy bananas, Musa basjoo which we may attempt to over-winter in situ. We will cut the main stems just under where the leaves break and cover with a plastic pot, over which we will drape a taught wigwam of Environmesh, which will keep the roots somewhat dry over the winter. I hope the bananas will give an air of the exotic. There are a few new plants on display this time including the giant fennel, Ferula communis, Veronica ‘Pewter Dome’, Dahlia excelsa, Dahlia rudus, Arundo donaxand Commelina coelestis as well as the old tried and tested plants saved from these borders.
I hope you enjoy the new plantings!
