The Stable Yard: From Carriages to Cars
Until the early 20th century, Glenarm Castle’s horses and ponies were used for the family and the estate’s every transport need. The 5th Earl of Antrim also kept a string of racehorses at Glenarm, training them on purpose-built gallops.
The 11th Earl William, and his wife Louisa, were enthusiastic motorists and as the internal combustion engine began to replace horsepower, the stables were adapted to house the family’s cars.
The McDonnell family’s love of motoring continued with the 14th Earl’s (Alexander) collection of vintage motor cars, a passion shared by his son Randal, the current Lord Antrim.
