Walled Garden & Woodland Walk
Come and explore our beautiful and historic Walled Garden, recent winner of the Historic Houses Garden of the Year Award.
Originally created in the 1820s, in recent years the Walled Garden has been fully re-imagined, re-designed and restored by Lord and Lady Antrim to create a garden full of colour, scent and beauty.
While its original purpose was to provide the estate with its fresh fruit, vegetables and cut flowers; the Walled Garden still echoes this original productive purpose with its vibrant herbaceous borders, lush ornamental fruit gardens and beautiful potager style vegetable garden – all planted in a way that guarantees our visitors colour from early spring until the end of October. Other features include a Mount from which one can see across the North Channel to Scotland; one of Ireland’s largest Victorian glasshouses still in use; water features as well as sculptures by local Irish artists. Here there is something for everyone; from those just looking for a relaxing stroll among lovely surroundings to the keenest plantsman and garden enthusiast.
New for 2026: Children under 12 now enjoy FREE entry to the Walled Garden, Woodland Walk and Heritage Centre, making it an even better day out for families.
Audio Guides for the Walled Garden, narrated by Sean Rafferty of BBC Radio 3, are available for a small hire fee at the Welcome Centre. Hear the history of the Walled Garden from the 18th Century till the modern day. (Subject to availability)
Woodland Walk
Our lovely Woodland Walk provides the perfect opportunity to stretch your legs on the Glenarm Estate. Accessed through the top of the Walled Garden here you can enjoy a peaceful haven for red squirrels, robins, rabbits, and a whole host of other birds and wildlife. You can also get a bird’s eye view over the Walled Garden and estate beyond. In spring specimen camellias and rhododendrons bloom here, as well as white carpets of wild garlic flowers, while in autumn you can enjoy our growing collection of acer maple trees in all their rich autumn hues. We also offer a children’s trail in the Woodland Walk to keep little ones occupied.
